Dr Joanna Syroka is Senior Underwriter & Director of New Markets at Fermat Capital, LLC
Joanna joined Fermat in 2017 and has over 20 years of experience in structuring and placing risk transfer programs in both emerging and developed markets. Prior to joining Fermat, she was the Director of Research & Development at African Risk Capacity (ARC), Africa’s first sovereign insurance pool which she helped design and establish in 2012. Joanna led the development of ARC’s parametric drought, flood, cyclone, pandemic and climate insurance initiatives. Before ARC, from 2004 to 2009 she led the efforts to develop tailored weather and commodity risk management products for agricultural applications with the World Bank and in the humanitarian arena with the United Nations World Food Programme. She started her career with Centrica plc developing quantitative weather and gas risk management strategies for Centrica's trading and hedging operations. Joanna received a PhD in atmospheric physics (2003) and a BSc degree in physics (1999) from Imperial College, London. She is based in Connecticut.
